About W Energy Advisory
Habib Yunus started W Advisory in January 2013 to focus on three market areas others overlooked: (1) Deal execution, (2) Advisory focused on Japan-North America energy investment, and (3) De-linking success fees from transaction value.
Deal Execution: We will take the project and ensure that it gets over the finish line. We are willing to do this even if we didn’t source the deal, and even if we aren’t the lead Advisor. Too many times small businesses lose deals because of lack of experience or resources to finish the deal. Similarly, deals can breakdown at the 11th hour. There is value to bringing in someone that can objectively get a deal closed.
Advisory focused on Japan-N. America energy investment: There are no other firms that have offices and experience in the US, Canada and Japan. US companies that want to bring in a Japanese partner can call us. Similarly, Japanese companies working on a deal in N. America see value in bringing in a Japanese speaker who understands their cultural context.
De-linking success fees from transaction amount: Particularly in buyside advisory, a percentage-based transaction fee jeopardizes an advisor’s independence. All else equal, the buyside should strive to reduce the transaction amount (not value). However, if the fee is a percentage of the value, the Advisor has an incentive to increase the transaction value even though his stated objective is to reduce the transaction amount. This has turned off companies from using a buyside advisor. By de-linking the fee from the transaction amount, Buyers should feel more comfortable retaining an Advisor to help them get the best value for the amount.
